maledicent ~ cursing; addicted to speaking evil
Well, I made it home again from my retreat, but it was a near thing. There was a tiny bit of snow on the drive up; day two it rained; day three there was extreme wind (with the chance of us losing power; and day four we had snow added to the wind. One of the major highways was closed both ways due to accidents, but fortunately it was not the route I’d planned on taking. However, driving conditions were abysmal on the route I did take and I only narrowly missed getting caught up in delays by two other accidents along the way.
Obviously I made it home, but it was not without a price. The sinus cold I’d been fighting off before the retreat got its hooks in my head and chest and turned into the mother of all colds/flus. This kind of sent all my determination and good intentions packing last week and other than popping cold pills and babysitting (granddaughter also had a major cold so we were quite the pair) I didn’t do much of anything.
Did you know the only difference between a cold and the flu is that the flu comes with a fever? All this years I thought the flu was a stomach virus, but apparently a stomach virus is just that, not the flu. Someone forgot to send me a memo when that changed. Just like I never got the memo that instead of coughing/sneezing into your hand you’re supposed to sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Just suddenly one day everyone was doing it that way and I’m like, “what are you doing?”
The retreat itself was a lot of fun and I got a lot of writing done, although mostly short stuff from the workshop prompts. There were 15 of us in a big old manor house that overlooked Lake Simcoe. It was kind of interesting watching the frozen lake fill up with ice fisherman during the day, and then the lights from the snow mobiles when night started to fall.
The house is owned and administered to by a group of nuns, which accounted for its well stocked library of religious tomes and the insanely narrow, hard beds we had to sleep on. Being a house, not a hotel, we had to provide our own food and we were divided into groups to make lunches and suppers. There were a handful of food sensitivities in the group, and one vegetarian, and only one meal that had meat – a lunch that consisted of soup and sandwich fixings. You should have seen how fast that meat disappeared!
It was a good group – from a young screen writer to a research doctor writing her memoir. There were a couple of others writing life-based stories, a couple writing non-fiction, a few writing fiction, and the rest just writing.
All in all, I’d do it again. Maybe not in winter though. And next time I definitely want a room of my own. :-)

Menisciform Monday
menisciform ~ shaped like a crescent
As I started typing this post I was thinking, “Wow, it doesn’t seem like it’s just been a week” and then I realized, that’s because it’s been two weeks. I missed last Monday’s post both here and on My Writing Journal blog.
A week ago Sunday I got hit by the nasty flu bug that’s been going around. And when I say hit, I mean sucker punched. One minute I was watching Star Trek: Discovery, wondering if I’d had a little too much birthday cake after supper, the next minute I was hugging the big white porcelain telephone (or in my case the beige one to match my tub), where I was pretty much camped out for the next several hours.
Monday I was too busy feeling miserable to worry about writing blog posts. I vaguely remember we had a beautiful snow fall going on that day but I didn’t have much appreciation for it. Which is a shame, because by Wednesday, when I was feeling like I might possible live again, the weather turned warm and the next couple of days were mild and wet and washed most of my beautiful snow away again.
Wednesday was also the day I’d planned to take the grandbaby to MacDonald’s for lunch to celebrate my birthday. Seeing as I was just starting to re-introduce solid food to my stomach that sure didn’t happen. Maybe we’ll wait until February and invite Grappy along to celebrate his birthday as well. It can be a triple celebration since the grandbaby’s birthday is this coming weekend.
So last week was pretty much lost in a haze of being sick, then recovering from being sick. Not exactly the way I’d envisioned spending my birthday week, but sometimes these things are beyond our control. After the worst of it was over I was able to get a lot of reading in, and even catch up on a couple of movies I’d been wanting to watch. So it wasn’t a total loss.
But I can't help thinking that maybe I was a little too hasty in embracing 2018. The Chinese New Year starts on February 16 - hopefully the Year of the Dog will be kinder than the Year of the Rooster was.

Masseter Monday
masseter ~ muscle used to move the lower jaw
I’m back. Did you miss me? Did you even notice I was gone? LOL
A funny thing happened on the way to getting my post written last week...
Usually I write this post on Sunday night. For whatever reason - I guess I was busy last weekend and too tired on Sunday night - I put off the post until Monday. But like happens all too often, I didn’t get it done before I had to leave for babysitting, and by the time I got home again it was too late.
Normally I’m the last person to complain about the cold or being cold, but last Monday I was so cold at my daughter’s house I thought her furnace had broken. It hadn’t. That was my first warning sign. The second was that I had absolutely no desire to eat the wonderful lunch I’d made myself - baked salmon, sweet potato, and brussel sprouts.
When I got home again I changed into my jammies, slippers, and bathrobe and curled up in the recliner under a blanket. And promptly fell asleep. Which is the best I can say about last week. The excessive sleeping.
When I wasn’t sleeping I was in utter misery from the worst case of viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu) I’ve ever had the misfortune to experience. Thank God the hubby got the toilet installed in the downstairs bathroom that weekend. I could not imagine going through this with only one working bathroom, and an upstairs one at that.
Tuesday and Wednesday I pretty much lived on water and apple juice, alternating sips of both. Poor hubby had to fend for himself as far as suppers went - good thing we had a supply of Campbell's Chunky Soup in a variety of flavours (although even the smell of them didn't help matters). I was so sick I even bailed on babysitting.
Thursday I felt marginally better, but rushed the whole eating thing (as opposed to sipping juice and water) and Thursday night I paid heavily for my folly. Friday I started to follow the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) and actually felt well enough to babysit. I’m really amazed at how much the bananas in particular helped.
Anyway, by Saturday I was over the worst of it, and slowly began to introduce solid food back into my diet. If Thursday night taught me anything, it was to not rush getting back to normal. The virus has run its course and it’ll take a while for my body to recover. Fine by me.
Now I just have to find the time to watch all the TV shows I slept through.
;-)
